Carta de Felipe II al arzobispo de Mexico.
Letter signed "Yo El Rey",
1 page, Madrid, 25 November 1578, to the Archbishop of Mexico, Pedro Moya de Contreras; written in Spanish,
countersigned by Antonio de Erasso.
CATALOGUE NOTE
The King complains about reports that if a priest, appointed to the care of the Indians, is found to be of evil life or teaching, he is wont to impose on him solely a fine in money, and to leave him in the benefice or even to promote him to a better one. This is so light a punishment that the priest serves as an evil example to the Indians, whereas if the clergy knew that the penalty for scandalous living would be expulsion from their benefices that would take care to control and improve their conduct; the King exhorts the Archbishop to see that God and the salvation of those in his care are served by proper punishment of guilty priests.
Endorsed on the verso with seven monograms of Councillors of the Indies.
